I grew up in Melbourne with parents who were ‘conservers’ – growing fruit & vegetables, keeping chooks, repairing clothes and DIY building sheds, fences and paths.

Upon my retrenchment in 1991, I decided to “busy myself” with volunteering in the community. As I had always had an interest in the environment, I started to investigate suitable groups to develop my interests.

A friend of mine told me about this group Householders’ Options to Protect the Environment (HOPE) which was gaining popularity and spreading throughout Victoria and other places. HOPE “encourages people to take responsibility for their relationship with the environment in their daily lives”. The aims, as stated in HOPE’s Charter, were exactly what I was looking for!
