Including more than 150 mm acres in the US and Canada, over 380 mm acres of forest worldwide are certified under FSC’s system.  The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a US organization that sets standards for responsible forest management with the mission to promote environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world's forests.

The Forest Stewardship Council program is voluntary.  It harnesses market demand for the management of forests.

FSC has developed a set of 10 principles and 57 criteria that apply to FSC-certified forests.  It is supported by such NGOs as the WWF and Greenpeace.
