Community-based organizations (CBOs) are essential for emergency preparedness and crucial in responding to and mitigating the impact of disaster.  While government agencies and international organizations play an important role in disaster response, the backbone of resilient communities lies in strengthening local organizations.

Community-based organizations are an essential link between those affected and the emergency responders as they disseminate information, coordinate resources, and provide assistance in the event of emergency and disaster.  Their grassroots approach and local connections allow them to effectively reach the vulnerable population.

Collaboration between community organizations and authorities improves disaster preparedness and response.  Community organizations have local knowledge that helps in targeted communication efforts, as their established communication channels allow for rapid dissemination of information.  Trust and relationships built over time allow for effective communication during emergencies.

Local organizations are at the forefront of disseminating information and raising awareness of potential hazards, evacuation plans, and preparedness measures.  By conducting workshops in the community, distributing brochures, and using digital platforms, they empower people to make informed decisions and take proactive steps toward disaster resilience.

Effective disaster response requires careful planning.  Local organizations work with community members, government agencies, and other stakeholders to develop comprehensive response plans.  These plans include emergency protocols, evacuation routes, communication strategies, and resource management frameworks.

Local organizations place great emphasis on training community members in first aid, search and rescue techniques, psychological support, and other relevant skills.  In this way, individuals are empowered to act effectively in emergencies, leading to increased overall resilience at the community level.

Local organizations identify vulnerable areas in their communities and advocate for necessary infrastructure improvements.  This can include building resilient housing, establishing emergency shelters, improving access to clean water, and strengthening communication networks.

Service providers work directly with local organizations.  This may be made possible through a funding mechanism geared towards nonprofit grassroots organizations.
