Buildings are responsible for around 40% of energy and process-related global CO₂ emissions, 50% of all materials used, 33% of water consumption and 35% of waste.  Other environmental impacts include resource depletion, pollution of air, water and soil, and biodiversity loss.  By 2050, the global population is expected to grow to 9.8 billion people, and by 2060, the global building footprint is expected to double, amplifying all environmental, social and economic impacts associated with the built environment.  Given these significant impacts, the built environment is key to the transformative change needed to decarbonize our global economy.  The sustainable built environment is a critical solution to climate change, creating resilient, thriving communities and driving economic growth.
