Barcelona is the capital and largest city of the autonomous community of Catalonia and the second most populous municipality of Spain, with a population of 1.6 million.  Located on the on the coast of northeastern Spain, the metropolitan area of the city is home to around 4.8 million people.

Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural centre, with architectural works designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  Barcelona is the 12th most popular city destination in the world and the 5th amongst European cities.  The city is home to the University of Barcelona and Pompeu Fabra University.

Barcelona's influence in global socio-economic affairs qualifies it for global city status (Beta +), according to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.
