The City of Boston is the capital and largest city of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the cultural and financial center of the New England region of the Northeastern United States.  Boston encompass an area of about 48.4 sq mi (125 km2) and a population of 675,647 as of 2020.

Greater Boston is the economic and cultural anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area, home to 4,941,632 people as of 2020, ranking as the tenth-largest metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the country.  16% of the land in Boston is dedicated to public open space.

Boston is one of the oldest municipalities in America and an important port and manufacturing hub as well as a center for education and culture.  Today, Boston is a center of scientific research and a world leader in higher education.
