Greenpeace Aotearoa New Zealand was founded in 1974, three years after Greenpeace's origins in Canada. In 2020, Greenpeace New Zealand name changed to Greenpeace Aotearoa (GPAo). Greenpeace Aotearoa is the national office of Greenpeace International and one of New Zealand's largest environmental organizations.
Aotearoa campaigns to protect the natural environment, against nuclear weapons and nuclear power, deforestation, the release of genetically engineered organisms into the natural environment, climate change, and toxics. It uses tactics of non-violent direct action to draw attention to what it considers significant threats to the environment, and then lobbies for solutions.
Since its founding, Greenpeace New Zealand has been at the forefront of global environmental campaigns.
