The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is responsible for coordinating responses to environmental issues within the United Nations system.  Based in Nairobi, Kenya, the United Nations Environment Assembly is UNEP's governing body and the world's highest-level decision-making body on the environment.

The UNEP sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.  Its mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment.

The UNEP's overriding aim is to help the world meet the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs).
